A bookstore where you can read with a cat on your lap.

Jennifer Mowdy opened Literary Cat Co. in Pittsburg, Kansas in 2023 with a variety of compelling books for sale.

But Jennifer, a former educator and cat rescuer, made rescue cats a basic part of her store.

In her bookstore, rescue cats are available to read with, play with, relax with, and get to know. And to adopt. To date, bookstore customers have adopted 32 of the store's cats.

As for bookstores:

"They're much more than a place you read books," Jennifer told The Washington Post. "They're a community hub."

Jennifer adopted kitties Hank, Scarlett, and Mike, making them bookstore top management and several other cats are living in the bookstore, each seeking a loving home.

Jennifer told The Post:

"We partner with a rescue [SEK Animal Advocates], and when they get a cat that they think has a personality that would fit, or they haven't been successful in adopting a cat through other means, if we have the room, we take them in."

These cats are nurtured, groomed, and given their meds, and their living space is kept spotless to avoid odors.

Some cats find homes quickly, while others may stay for months.

Among the adopters are Eric Seiwert and his wife Lori, who adopted a brother and sister, whom they named Frog and Toad.

"We fell in love with them when we went and visited," said Lori. The Seiwerts still stop in to visit Jennifer, and play with the other cats.

Her bookstore has become a community gathering place, including parents and children, college students from nearby Pittsburg State University and book and animal lovers.

"I am so proud," said Jennifer. "It's like a dream."
