Finding true love in a N.Y.C. subway car.
Betsaida Mercado of Harlem was commuting on the subway, when among the crowd she saw a tiny tabby kitten, boldly walking along the subway platform.
Showing no fear, this kitty stepped into Betsaida's rapid transit service 2 train meowing merrily as she examined the subway car and its people.

Concerned this kitten could be injured, Betsaida acted.

She took this fur baby into her arms.
"My first initial thought when I got her was like, 'What do I do?' I've never picked up a stray ever in my life," she told People magazine. "So, this was a very 'Oh my gosh' moment."
Unable to get help from MTA personnel or the police, Betsaida trusted her gut. "I think it's a sign from God to take her home," she thought.
To keep this kitten safe, she held her until she reached her stop.
Betsaida then took her to a veterinarian, who said this little stray is healthy, and then vaccinated her. She turned out to be roughly 7 weeks old, and weighed 1.5 pounds.
Naming her Emmie, in honor of the "MTA," Betsaida brought her home.
Emmie quickly learned to use the litter box. "She's a very fast learner. Extremely intelligent," said Betsaida, who had never had a cat before.
Betsaida has no children, but she does have King, a 13-year-old Pomeranian-Shih Tzu mix, who welcomed Emmie into the pack.
Grateful for how well things have gone, Betsaida told People, "I really just thank myself for who I am. I've always told myself I would never be a bystander. I would always help if I can help."
