Officer Martin of the City of Erie, Pennsylvania Police Department responded to a call reporting that children were "playing catch with a kitten."

When he arrived, he found the kids "tossing this kitten back and forth," and immediately rescued this helpless little creature and rushed it to The ANNA [Animal] Shelter.

The Shelter's veterinarian examined the kitten, and found he "had no broken bones but was in shock," the Shelter told People magazine.

And the kitten was also "suffering from an upper respiratory infection."

The Shelter welcomed in this traumatized, sick and homeless kitten and gave him love and care and plenty of medical attention, as he was nursed back to health.

Because of his fur colors, the Shelter named him "Oreo."

And Oreo had a new friend, Officer Martin who would stop in to check on him as he recovered.

The Shelter announced on its Facebook page that Officer Martin, "... decided to officially become Oreo's dad AND hero! He is fostering to adopt this kitten that he truly saved from death!"

Adding, "Oreo will grow up safe and happy, thanks to Officer Martin!"
