October Books: When this small bookstore had to move, hundreds of volunteers moved it
Since the 1970’s, Southampton, England based October Books has been a community fixture.
This little bookstore and cooperative not only sells books, but is a meeting place among kindred spirits to discuss their ideas, and where authors come to make a personal connection.
But as the years passed, rents rose and October Books could no longer afford to stay.

Last November, the co-op membership notified the landlord the bookstore was moving.
The new location was just a city block away, but how were they going to move 2,000 books?
Using social media and good old-fashioned flyers, the co-op reached out to the community, and hundreds of people arrived at the appointed hour.
There were so many people, that they formed a human chain, shoulder to shoulder, and handed books one by one all the way down the street and into the new shop.
Soon October Books was back in business, complete with its kindred spirits and authors.
In this age of Amazon and bookstore giants, it’s heartwarming to see a community value such a time-honored bookstore tradition.
