Maria Andrejczyk ("andray - check"): An Olympian who sold her Silver Medal so a baby could have life-saving surgery.
A Polish Javelinist, Maria had just won that Silver Medal at the Tokyo Olympics when she heard about 8-month-old Miloszek ("milo - shek") Malysa.
From a rare heart defect, this Polish infant was fighting for his life.
His parents were desperately trying to raise the money to send him to Stanford University Medical Center in Northern California for this complicated surgery and extended recovery.

Maria, a bone cancer survivor, knew this baby needed to be flown immediately to Stanford, so she auctioned her Silver Medal.
The high bidder was Zabka, a large supermarket chain in Poland, bidding $125,000. This money was a godsend to this infant and his parents, now able to save his life.
And there is another remarkable turn to this story.
Knowing how much this Silver Medal meant to Maria, this Polish supermarket chain returned the Medal to her.
Maria was deeply grateful, and added:
"The true value of a medal always remains in the heart. A medal is only an object, but it can be of great value to others."
