Jonathan Pinkard needed a heart transplant to survive.

But he was homeless. And with no medical support system, he didn't qualify for the waiting list to receive a new heart.

However, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital near Atlanta, he came under Lori's care. Two days after learning of his dire situation, she made Jonathan a remarkable offer.

Lori, age 57 and 35-years a nurse, would become his legal guardian and move him into her home where she would take care of him.

"I couldn't believe that somebody who had known me only two days would do this," Jonathan, age 27, told The Washington Post. "It was almost like a dream."

"At some point," Lori told The Post, "God places people in situations in your life, and you have a choice to do something about it."

"For me, there was no choice. I'm a nurse; I had an extra room. It was not something I struggled with. He had to come home with me."

Lori brought Jonathan home to live with her and one of her three adult sons.

On August 1st, Jonathan underwent a seven-hour successful transplant, and then returned home to Lori's care.

"He's welcome to stay here as long as he wants to," Lori told The Post.

"But I also know that he deserves to have his own life. So at some point, when he's ready, we're going to try to make that happen."

"I feel like I'm one of her sons," said Jonathan. "All I can say is, 'Thank you, Mama Lori. Thank you. I love you.'"
