This year at the National Senior Games in the women’s 100-plus division, Julia won gold medals in the 50-meter and 100-meter dashes, setting new speed records in the process.

Yet she didn’t even start running until she was 100-years-of-age.

Until then, she had been a bike rider.

Julia of Baton Rouge, Louisiana was married to Murray Hawkins for over 50-years, until his death in 1995.

They met at Louisiana State University, where to afford to attend, she worked as many as three-jobs and graduated in 1938 with a degree in Education.

Julia is a mother of 4, a grandmother of 3 and a great-grandmother of 3.

What advice does she offer us? Stay active. In her case, in addition to sports and her family, she loves nature and enjoys gardening in the fresh air of her beautiful backyard.

“I always have all kinds of birds and trees and flowers and all kinds of good things.”

As for sports, “I hope I’m inspiring [others] to be healthy and to realize you can still be doing it at this kind of an age.”
