And 28-year-old Phillip Blanks, a retired Marine and former high school and college football star wide receiver, made the catch of his lifetime.
A dramatic video shows him sprinting to the apartment building and making a diving catch of this child, saving his life.
"Instinct. There wasn't much thinking. I just reacted. I just did it," Phillip told KABC7 News. He added that protecting others has always been important to him.
Meanwhile, another Good Samaritan also took action.
"When we kicked the door down that's when I [saw] flames come in," said neighbor Leonard Thompson to KABC7.
"That's when I heard the screaming, so I just went into the apartment and grabbed the little girl, and I realized when I dragged her out, she was severely burned from top to bottom."
Phoenix police reported the rescued children, Jameson and Roxanne had serious but non-life-threatening burns.
Sadly, their 30-year-old mother Rachel Long did not survive the flames. Their father Corey Long was at work when the fire began.
But the next day he met with the Good Samaritans and expressed his heartfelt gratitude.
If ever you think people don't risk their lives for strangers, think of the Covid first responders and caregivers, and think of these marvelous Good Samaritans who saved these two children.
