The Franklin County, Kansas Sheriff's Office: A godsend to a mother with 3-year-old twins.
The Sheriff's Office received calls about a woman walking down a remote highway in extremely cold weather. When Deputy Evan Macklin checked, he met Christine Wheeler.
Christine is the mother of 3-year-old twin boys and she walks a 12-mile round trip about 4-days-a-week to her convenience store job, to support those little boys.
A typical Kansas winter morning temperature can be in the 20's, while a typical 6-mile walk can take 3-hours. But Christine had no choice. She needed her job to support her twins.

Worse yet, in a Kansas winter her walk can be in freezing, windy, rainy or even snowy conditions.
"I came back to the office and talked to my shift about if there was anything we could do for her," Deputy Macklin told KMBC9 TV News.
The answer was a resounding yes!
Shortly before Christmas, after pooling their resources and with community support, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office surprised Christine with a free van prepaid for a year.
Not only was the van free, but its insurance and taxes were paid for as well.
But even that's not all. The Sheriff's Office included as gifts, two installed car seats for her little boys, holiday presents, and food and winter coats.
"It really made me want to help her because she was doing it for her kids," said Deputy Macklin.
"I want to say, 'Thank you guys so much,'" Christine said in her excitement and through her tears. "This means the world to me."
