Elderly dog floating in a shopping cart survives flood waters.
In June, 10-year-old dog Dorothea was in an Arizona flood canal, trapped in the racing waters, alive only because she was afloat on a shopping cart.
Tired and wet, Dorothea was spotted by a Good Samaritan, who contacted the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), and the AHS and the Phoenix Fire Department sprang into action.

To save her, a rescuer climbed into the canal using a ladder, reached her with a rake and lassoed her with an animal control pole and brought her to dry land.
Soon she was "all tail wags," in joy.
No-one knows how she got into the canal or into the shopping cart, or how long she was there.
When Dorothea was examined in the AHS Pet Ambulance, she was dehydrated, hungry, loaded with ticks and "a bit stinky from the canal water."
After a thorough exam at the AHS' Lazin Animal Trauma Hospital, they found she did have some fractured teeth and other injuries, but she was healthy.
Dorothea lived in the AHS shelter for approximately a month, where her teeth were fixed, while she also received medical care, spa days and nurturing and cuddles from the staff.
She blossomed and this abandoned dog found her forever home with a loving family who are grateful to have her, as she lives out her senior years in comfort and in happiness.
