For Bryson of Lebanon, Virginia, receiving Bruce, a lab-mix puppy was a dream come true and the two played happily together.

But then Bruce got sick with parvo, an often-deadly disease and struggled for his life.

The initial cost to treat this puppy would be $655, and potentially much more. Bryson's parents couldn't afford it.

"Bruce got sick and needed my help," Bryson told The Washington Post. "I was super sad. I didn't want to lose my best friend."

Even though his mother told him they would somehow get the money Bryson believed he had to do something to raise the money. But what?

Bryson had one valuable asset, his Pokémon collection.

For four years, Bryson had collected "hundreds of cards," his mother told The Post. "Christmas, birthdays, any holiday you get gifts on, that's what he asks for, and that's what he gets."

The next day, after school, Bryson put a table and chair outside, with a big sale sign, and began to sell his cards.

His mother posted a photo on Facebook and the support "was overwhelming," she said.

People began donating their cards and/or their money. And his mother began a GoFundMe as thousands of dollars poured in.

Then Pokémon in Seattle heard about Bryson's cause and sent him a parcel filled with rare cards. "I couldn't believe it," he told The Post. "I was so, so, so, so excited."

The money they received has far exceeded their needs and they are using it to pay the vet bills of other sick pets in their area.

As for Bruce, he is now healthy and happy and back to being Bryson's little buddy.
