On June, 22nd 1996 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the KKK held a rally. The police, in riot gear, kept the KKK cordoned off on one side, the angry crowd on the other.

But amidst the protesters, a woman protester spotted a middle-aged man wearing a Confederate T-shirt and with a Nazi SS symbol tattooed on his arm.

Using her bullhorn, she yelled to the crowd to “get him” and the crowd grabbed the fleeing man and started beating him.

Realizing this man’s life was in danger, 18-year-old Keshia, herself a protester, threw herself over this man and protected him from the mob, until the police intervened.

The man she rescued, Albert McKeel, Jr. never thanked her, but his son later approached Keshia in a coffee shop and expressed his appreciation.

And 20-years-later, when Albert McKeel, Jr. passed away, his son called Keshia.

His son also put his 12-year-old sister on the line, a child who might never have been born had Keshia not rescued their father.

The son and daughter do not share their father’s racist opinions.

In the years since the incident, Keshia volunteered in New York City after the 9/11 attacks, helped create a shelter for California fire victims and distributed food to Hurricane Katrina victims.

She joined an NAACP voting rights march as well, walking 1,000 miles from Selma, Alabama to Washington D.C. and she volunteered in a Haitian makeshift medical facility.

For one of the lessons Keshia learned from that fateful day 23-years-ago, is that one determined person really can make a difference.
